Rhiannon Adam has used a variety of different locations in this composite: Whitstable, Dungeness, Denmark, Hamburg, City airport, Rhossili, St James Park, Buckingham Palace, Whitehall, the South Bank, West Wales and Port Talbot.

Fonetic Flag (2011) Various Artist

This artwork is about language, national identity and class consciousness.
The Fonetic Flag offers a particular voice phonetically singing out the syllables of England. Reminiscent of football chants or drunken market towns at last orders these photographs document two significant locations for the artist to fly the flag.

 

Iqbal Tamini (2011) Daniel Bosworth

Iqbal Tamimi left Hebron in the West Bank in 1967 at the age of 5, when the Israeli army invaded and occupied the city. She has since lived at 54 addresses in 4 different countries. She currently lives in Bristol.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR PICKET PERFORMANCE – CROSSING THE LINE.

• You know the slates surrounding your new fireplace,
I noticed you had some spare, take four, spray with metallic paint
and arrange them on the gallery floor in a square.

• Ask someone to play ‘Another One Bites The Dust’ at random points during the evening of the Private View.

• Dance on the slate square, incorporate movements
of falling into your performance.

The first is on the dunes at Studland on the south coast, this location references entry into the UK from the English Channel, an area of expected invasion during the second world war and a period of intense patriotism and national feeling. The second photograph is in Worcester on the site of the battle of Worcester fought on Fort Royal Hill. The English civil war and brief republic references a different England and a different kind of patriot and Englishness.
   

Sites of Caution and Signs of Danger. #1 to #162 Charlie Hurcombe
An ongoing project which documents the permanent and temporary demarcation of potentially hazardous interzones found throughout the external urban spaces of the town and the city. Through the specific placement of structures or manipulated surfaces, often habitually modified through the painted application of discordant colours or adhesive tape and the ubiquitous stripe, the desirable limits of certain physical human activities are visibly outlined. Boundaries and restrictions are established in relation to a conditioned response. Sometimes permanent, sometimes fleeting, sometimes obvious, sometimes unexpected, these functional and carefully positioned objects indicate a possible risk of interaction both by accident and intention. Here the visible is paramount and contact is unwelcome and to be denied.

‘Sites of Caution and Signs of Danger. #1 to #162’ consists of a series of 35mm slides to be projected on a continuous loop.

Equipment:
2 Kodak 35mm slide projector (carousel type) each fitted with self timer to allow continuous repeat projection.
Each projector holds 81 35mm slides.
